Ellen’s grandfather, Samuel
, was the founder and owner of the spirits company that later became The Seagram Company, Ltd. Seagram became the global leader in its industry, offering well-known brands such as Chivas Regal, Martell Cognac, Glenlivet, V.O., Seagram’s Seven, Crown Royal, Tropicana Juices, Mumm Champagne and Perriet Jouet, amongst many others. The company later held a significant position in Dupont, the world’s largest chemical company. Over time, Samuel
’s son, Charles
, in addition to his executive management role at Seagram, built Claridge Investments, which became the private investment firm for him and his two children, Stephen and Ellen. In addition to its ownership of Seagram, Claridge was also a significant shareholder in Teva Pharmaceutical, Cadillac Fairview and Cineplex Odeon, amongst many other companies.
In the 1990’s, Seagram diversified its operations into media and entertainment with the acquisition of MCA/Universal Studios in 1994 and Polygram in 1997, which created one of the world’s largest entertainment conglomerates. In 2000, Vivendi merged with Seagram, creating Vivendi Universal.
Upon their relocation to London, England in 1995, Andell was created by Andrew and Ellen to manage their varied publicly traded and privately held business and investment holdings. Since then, the firm has continued the tradition of partnering with great management teams to build world-class businesses. Some of those businesses in which Andell has invested are: Vivendi Universal, Koor Industries, SunOpta, Dick Clark Productions, Canyon Ranch and PODS. In addition, Andell is currently a limited partner with over 80 best-in-class investment managers covering virtually every asset class.
